How Old Are The Characters In Heated Rivalry

Ever picked up a romance novel and found yourself wondering, "Just how old are these characters, anyway?" If you've read Rachel Reid's fan-favorite hockey romance Heated Rivalry, you're definitely not alone. Let's break down the ages of Shane and Ilya and see why knowing them makes the story even more fun.

The Age of Shane Hollander: A Young Star Burning Bright

Shane Hollander enters the story as a talented 20-year-old NHL phenom. He's fresh off being drafted at just 18, which means he's still figuring life out off the ice. You know that feeling when you're young and everything about the future feels wide open? That's Shane in a nutshell.

Shane's age is central to his character arc. Being so young in a league full of seasoned veterans gives him something to prove every single night. It also makes his intense attraction to Ilya all the more confusing for him.

Here's the fun part: at 20, Shane is old enough to have a serious hockey career but young enough to still crack jokes in the locker room. Life's a balancing act, and honestly, watching him navigate it is half the entertainment of the book.

The Age of Ilya Rozanov: Seasoned, Fierce, and Mysterious

Now let's talk about Ilya Rozanov, the Russian powerhouse who turns Shane's world upside down. Ilya is around 26 to 27 years old when the rivalry truly heats up. He's been in the league long enough to have battle scars — emotional ones too.

That's roughly a five-to-six-year age gap between the two leads. In romance terms, this age difference adds a delicious layer of push and pull. Ilya has life experience that Shane doesn't, and that dynamic fuels their tension beautifully.

Ilya's age also makes him feel like a man with one foot out the door of his playing days. Every game could be one of his last, and that urgency bleeds into how fiercely he approaches everything — including romance.

Why Ages Matter in a Story Like This

You might think character ages are a minor detail, but in Heated Rivalry, they're actually incredibly important. Shane's youth and Ilya's experience create a push-and-pull dynamic that drives the entire plot. It's not just about hockey — it's about where these two are in life.

The age gap also mirrors the disparity in their public personas. Shane is the golden boy everyone adores, while Ilya is the gruff veteran no one expected to soften. Knowing their ages helps you appreciate why they clash so dramatically at first.

Plus, let's be honest — there's something undeniably fun about doing a little sleuthing to figure out character ages. It turns reading into an active, curious experience. You're not just absorbing a story; you're piecing together a puzzle.
