How Old Was Oliver In Call Me By Your Name

So you watched Call Me By Your Name, fell head over flipping heels for the sun-kissed romance, and then at 2 a.m. lay on your couch wondering: how old was Oliver, exactly? No judgment. We've all been down that rabbit hole.

Let's Set the Scene

The film follows 17-year-old Elio, a piano prodigy with awkward arm-hair and way too much intellectual confidence, as he spends a magical summer in Italy with his family. Enter Oliver, the handsome, charming grad student who crashes their annual vacation to work under Elio's professor dad.

Oliver swoops in wearing a big sweater in the heat and carrying himself like he owns every room he walks into. Naturally, 17-year-old Elio falls absolutely hard, which is relatable for anyone who has ever had a crush on a college senior.

The Big Reveal: Oliver's Age

Here is the moment you have been waiting for. Oliver is twenty-four years old throughout the story. Not twenty-five, not a mysterious "somewhere in his twenties" — a solid, documented 24.

That makes him exactly seven years older than Elio, which is the kind of age gap that sounds reasonable when you are 30 and insultingly generous when you are watching a teenager pine away. The novel by Andr\u00e9 Aciman confirmed this, and the film kept things consistent.

Why Does This Matter?

Because Oliver is basically an adult adult — a grad student with a PhD path, life experience, and the ability to buy his own toothpaste and alcohol. Meanwhile, Elio is navigating summer love while still relying on his parents for laundry.

The seven-year gap adds a delicious layer of tension and power imbalance to the story. Oliver holds all the cards, which is exactly why he keeps deflecting with jokes and that infuriatingly casual indifference.

Why the Call Me By Your Name Age Gap Isn't Problematic

Fun Facts to Impress Your Friends

Before the role of Oliver made him a bona fide heartthrob, Armie Hammer was already a name — he quite literally played both twins in the 2008 remake of The Lone Ranger. Guess he just loves doubling down on characters.

Fun trivia: Armie Hammer was actually 30 in real life when he filmed the movie, meaning the actor himself was even older than Oliver. All that youthful charm? Pure, unfiltered Hollywood magic and Tom Ford grooming.

The character of Elio was played by Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, who was a mere 19 at filming — only two years older than his character. Somehow he managed to look seventeen with just some freckles and a vulnerable stare.

The Bottom Line

So there you have it. Oliver was 24, Elio was 17, and a gorgeous Italian villa was essentially a romantic battlefield. The age gap added depth, messiness, and plenty of reasons for the internet to argue at midnight.

Whether you think seven years is no big deal or an absolute mountain, one thing is certain: 24-year-old Oliver gave us one of cinema's most swoon-worthy summers — and now you have a perfectly cited answer for your trivia nights.
